Sawdust For Brains

Yup...that's me with a head full of cold...

Take this morning for instance...I had to drive to Mole Valley Farmers in South Molton...quite a journey...to exchange a faulty part for the flue...

What a beautiful morning...why not drive just a little further and call in to see an old friend...

So I did...only she's moved!

GONE!

Some friend...but that's another story...

Let's say she was a user...

But some part of me hoped she'd change back to how she was when our children were young and friends...

Only she never did...

Then her husband up and left...

So maybe I should be grateful not to have caught up with her today after all!

Anyway...now I'd driven a way up the road I had an idea to drive as far as Tiverton to visit The Range shop...

So on I drove...

Cos I've been fancying a couple more really strong clothes baskets that they do...

I parked up in Tiverton to set the sat nav on my phone...

And then...

HORROR...

The dawning realisation that Tiverton doesn't have The Range...

Taunton does...

But that's a ways up the bloomin motorway...

No no!

So I turned around...

And tried to drink in the beauty of the scenery that this mornings glimmer of sun gave...

I tried...really I did...

But I'm still rather cheesed off with my sawdust brain!

Hopefully this afternoon things have improved in the upstairs department as I, fingers crossed, have written the last essays for my diploma...

No visit to the cottage today for me...

So instead I leave you with a glimmer of Christmas just passed...

'Twas rather buddiful!

Scary Moments

This morning at the cottage this arrived...

And proceeded to dig up the floor of the kitchen and dining areas...

See...SCARY!

After taking a few photos and getting covered with a generous layer of dust I went home and worried...

Wouldn't you?

Just to prove that things are being done...

Bottom of stairs...

From top of stairs...

Bathroom...with bath!..

Our bedroom...

To the untrained eye I'm sure it looks a fair mess...

But I'm beginning to see progress...

And if our electrician could just get better and come we'd be on our way!

The cold is still lingering...

I'm not making it feel welcome...

But this little fella, though not normally something I'd crave or have in the house gave some relief to my symptoms...

Who'd have thought a pot noodle could rock!

Slowly

Thank you Sheila and Sue...I am beginning to feel a little better...

But it has been a real stinker...read snotty!!

The sneezing appears to have stopped...

But I've moved onto coughing...

A silly tickly cough...

One that wakes you from slumber...

And leaves you spluttering and gasping in equal measures...

FAN-TAS-TIC.

Today I dragged my sorry ass derrière to a wholesale store...

It was the first time this side of Yule that I'd shopped anywhere but Lidl...

But it had to happen...

The time had come when we required a little more than bread and milk...

So to Booker it was...

They have good offers on washing powder...

And I'm trying some Pro dishwasher tablets...

Cut in half cos I'm mean!

My wish to live on WW2 rationing has fallen to the wayside...

Not through not wanting to...

But the total frustration trying to find out what exactly was on ration...

And how the amounts changed throughout the war...

I contacted the Imperial War Museum...

They sent a generic email stating I would get a reply within 8 weeks...

Nothing...

Yep nothing!

Frustrating...

Does anyone know...was flour rationed?..if so to what degree?..

I know bread wasn't till after the war and all about the national loaf...

Then there's soaps and soap powders...

Different beasts to our modern day products...

And as I make my own soap...would I have been able to purchase the ingredients...

Could I have reared my own poultry for meat?..

Maybe when we're settled at Little Winter I can find out more detailed information...

Maybe I should be better just buying only seasonally available produce...

Whatever...It will be on a sensible budget...

I'm making a concerted effort to finish my diploma...

This week hopefully...

Can't wait...

Seriously...

Can't!

I'm An Unkempt Woman

Last Monday morning I barely wanted to drag my backside out of bed...but I had to go to work...

All day I felt kind of out of sorts...but couldn't put my finger on the exact cause of my woes...

That evening I began to sneeze...

On Tuesday I declared that I had a cold...

Same on Wednesday...

How wrong I was...

I didn't HAVE a cold...

No!

I was merely GETTING a cold...

Thursday confirmed this with an aching shivering body and throbbing head...

This was the REAL deal...

Tuesday and Wednesday had just been the warm up...

I had to drive some distance to pick up a bath and take it over to Little Winter...

My hot bot came too...

So do I have photos of a nearly finished glorious home to show you...

Ermmm...No...

Do you want to see pictures of what I've been up to?

Shouldn't think so when all I've been doing is sneezing into dozens of tissues... Not a pretty sight...confirmed by hubby...bless him!

I can categorically confirm that I feel like shite...note posh spelling...

I look like a haggard old witch...seriously I need a haircut and haven't brushed said birds nest since Tuesday!

I need to do lots of things...but have energy for very little...

I can't wait to be rid of this cold...but am thankful that I do at the end of the day only have a cold...

I would love some sympathy...but am not really expecting any...

Inside my head I have plans for the cottage...

Outside my head I have done a scaled drawing of the kitchen and dining areas and little cutouts of our furniture...

Hopefully it will work out for us...

And some really special news...

Farm boy has had an offer accepted on a house near where he works...

And the really sickening thing is...

It's bloomin' IMMACULATE!

Soooo not jealous...

He deserves it...in fact he's come all the way home again this weekend to finish crafting our stairs...

Sadly I think he was secretly hoping for some of Mum's home made cooking...

Which for hygiene reasons has been very basic and limited...

Bless!!

Really?

We're still hard at it over at Little Winter...but look...

Living area...

Dining area...

Kitchen...

Patio...

Surely soon things will begin to look better...

For now I'm just rather pleased how the beam over the fireplace is looking!!

Keep smiling....J. X

Good Morning!

So what have I been up to...well...

Let me show you what a walk near Little Winter looks like...

Don't think it will be a flip flop walk even in Summer!

And Little Winter itself...

Lots of bashing still, but slowly it will begin to go back together...let's face it...any more walls down and we'll be into next door! The sand blaster blasted the fireplace and beams with crushed glass...the large oak beams fared better than the smaller pine ones, but they are in the process of being sanded. Hubby has sawn the edges off the supporting oak beams now, making them really lovely.

Hopefully soon the dust will clear...the stress will diminish, and the workload will ease...I'm off in a bit to earn a very thin crust, but our business continues to run and produce oodles of paperwork, and a dusty workforce makes lots of washing and large holes to fill with comfort food!

Our electricity and Internet supplies have been rather sporadic since Christmas...I've seen the electricity helicopter out more than once but it still goes off at the drop of a hat. Mysterious indeed.

It's finally turned colder here...drier would be welcome, but there are big wind warnings for us tomorrow so it will probably be a candlelit supper again...

Take care everybody...J. x

Keep, Store, Ditch

Oh my ears and whiskers...how can it possibly be time to return to work tomorrow...when there is just soooo much to do!

I'm finding sleep very easy to come by initially, however any time after 3am I'm awake...tossing and turning...being a little congested probably isn't helping as I find I'm waking up with a dry throat...

Anyway...I have problems...issues...whatever you like to call them...

Too much stuff...much that I don't want to let go of just yet...just in case...but...

Keep, store, ditch are three very important words at the moment...

All mugs with chips gave gone...next will be a sort out of glasses...brutal aren't I.

It doesn't help that lovely tableware is my downfall...much more so than handbags or shoes...I like to present a nice table...so why keep the crap stuff? Should not every meal be treated as special. What to do, what to do!

Some time ago, needing a good supply of everyday cutlery I purchased some from Macro...stainless Kings pattern...it was great, so when hosting a family gathering I had no qualms about getting some more...bad mistake...the batch was poorly made and has been very prone to rust...yuck...especially the knives...so we now are very limited on knives and inundated with spoons! Ah well...better this problem than those that many other people have to contend with I suppose.

I'm considering shelving out one of our Laura Ashley Bramley wardrobes to make a larder cupboard...we do tend to buy in bulk, and do rather a lot of baking...it's all got to go somewhere after all.

It's looking like our wardrobes won't fit in the bedroom so hey...may as well use one downstairs! Lucky the outlaws have oodles of room at theirs for storage.

The airing cupboard has been ripped out over at Little Winter making our future bedroom a more respectable size...but hey it's still a cottage and the ceiling slopes...what can I say...no bed bouncing allowed or likely!!

At least I can now visualise our bed in it at least.

It will be ok...it will it will...

Hubby will hopefully slow down now most of the demolition work has been done...he's been like a thing possessed since Christmas Eve...and when he's over tired reverts to acting like a crabby toddler...though he's done good at the cottage...

My main mission has been feeding and watering the small army of volunteers forced labor family members! They've been a tremendous help...farm boy returned up north yesterday after doing great work re building the staircase. He's kind...intelligent...handsome...and my boy...I love him to bits!

We welcomed a new family member to the fold this Season...Beatrice...Heidi appears to like her...but was rather alarmed when Bea tried suckling from her...We're having lots of little meetings and today look what happened...

Daughter named this photo Best Buddies...I hope she's right!

So Happy New Year Blessings to everyone...

If you happen to see a haggard...plaster dust coated woman being dragged along by a Newfie it might just be me!

Until next time take care. J. x
