What I Made With My Orts

Not pretty by any means...but sure tasts yummy...not that I've been allowed any on my SW diet...far too many syns. Inside that little roll is butter, brown sugar, raisins and mixed spice. Sorry birds...none for you today!

Yesterday found me ordering some cookery books relevant to eating during WW2. My father was in the Coldstream Guards at this time. Not long before he died he was adamant that I should write about it. Now I have in the past had poems published in various anthologies, and have always enjoyed writing...even so why he was so adamant I do not know. I feel quite upset with myself that over four years have passed and I haven't written a thing.

I'm not sure I want to delve too deeply into the battles that he fought...I know he suffered terrible nightmares. Maybe I could try the homefront route and find out more what that would have been like.

All I know at present is that I want and need to write something to lift the guilt I feel from my shoulders about this. And after all after being injured in France Dad did lots of cookery courses whilst recovering before being sent to Africa and Italy.

So yes...life and cooking on the homefront may be my best bet.

What Do You Do With Yours?

Your last piece of pastry that is...

Many a time I have donated mine to the bird table...but mostly I like to make up a little roly poly either with a little jam or some butter, spice, dried fruit. Yum.

Today before work I've made a batch of pastry ready for my day off tomorrow when a teddy pasty and quiche will be made...but that took me to thinking about the last little scrap of pastry...and what people use it for...Over to you...

A Good Loss

The other day I weighed in at Slimming World...

And...

I'd lost another 3 1/2lbs.

So 6lbs in all so far...hope I can keep up this good work.

I wonder though if this next week will be a little sticky.

The Clouds

As I looked outside the other day...this is what I saw...

The clouds were in a semi circle...it has been thundery of late...but strange...very strange!

Oh and this happened...

And yes...it was far too hot for a black bear to be in the polytunnel.

Miss no manners drank from the watering can...yuck.

Thanks Mum

Sadly I lost my Mum eleven years ago...but this photo of Heidi enjoying her Tarka Trail walk this morning says to me 'Thanks Mum'

She really enjoyed herself...and if I can forget that she rolled in fox poo twice so did I!

What better walk for a newfie than one involving a river!

Work later, but for now some quiet time in the garden.

For The Beauty All Around

Today is truly beautiful...even in my humble garden. Birds singing, sun shining, just enough breeze. Lovely. I'm on a late shift today, so don't have to leave until 2:30pm.

There's loads of potting and pruning to be done...slowly I'm making progress.

Sadly I do not have enough compost to do much more today...still can't complain. Any excuse for a sit down amongst the lilac and wisteria blossoms can't be a bad thing.

Our gas bbq has seen better days...I'd rather not have a gas bbq at all, but hubby is addicted, though not to the cleaning of said item! Anyway a start has been made with a wire brush. Paint will also be needed before I'm prepared to put any food near it again.

Maybe this won't be a bbq summer then!

Yesterday I was lucky enough to go to RHS Rosemoor...photos below

It was sooo pretty. Talking of which, last evening guess who went to the beach...

None other than my own personal teddy bear!

Progress

Just thought I'd mention, I managed to lose 2 1/2 lbs during my first week on the Slimming World eating plan. Sounded a tiny loss compared to some, but hey...that's nearly 5 pats of butter...yuck!

It will be a slimmer me that eventually moves to Winters End...talking of which there is no news to tell...still waiting the long wait.

Nearly all of our flower garden, as we've always been in rented accommodation and knew that we'd move on is in giant black pots...I mean giant too...think trees at the Chelsea Flower Show size! Unfortunately when we moved to here hubby squashed one or two whilst moving them with the loader, maybe eventually some will be relinquished to the soil at Winters End. The trouble is, I am so used to container gardening I'm no longer sure I will want to be working on large borders, we will just have to wait a bit longer and see what happens.

Colourful enough for you? The above piece was told to me to be 40 sts wide, 80 rows long, colourful and knitted in double knitting wool. Fast forward to last evenings W.I. Group meeting, apparently 80 rows were if you'd used really thin wool, lots were saying garter stitch should have been used, oh and eight inches was the required length. All I'm saying is that the above was the most colourful by a long long way! All the pieces donated are now being used to make charity blankets. I hope mine can still be used. Oh and W. I. bosses, make rules clearer next time please, I felt such a wally last night, what with Alison Murray being judge and guest speaker and all! For thise that don't know Alison is from All2Knit, heard of the knitted Christmas Tree, Gingerbread House and more, they've travelled all over the world for charity.

No Cheating ...Yet

There's been no cheating on my part...yet anyway. On this way of eating there is so much 'free food' that really it should be a doddle. Yae course it is!

This time I must continue the slog....my wardrobe is counting on me to be strong and resist temptation. Shift work is hard when others are eating...shock horror...sandwiches....the new evil, how about a pasty....oooh feint.

No....omelettes and frylight cooking are the way to go.

The fruit bowl will thank me for it's regular popularity.

Thank goodness for syns....it is going to be the weekend after all.

Cousins?

Our garden is beginning to bloom from all directions. We appear to welcome all to grow in our soil...hence these beauties....they are very good for butterflies so why not let them stay.

Excuses eh?

But these beauties always remind me of the home I was born too.

Now off too work...never mind that the sun is shining and I feel as lazy as a well...just lazy.

With The Sun On Your Back

Aaahhhh....a day off, and the sun is shining, what more could you ask for. Plants are beginning to bloom, bees are buzzing, the birds are singing, and well...it's lovely.

I want to find some decent looking mulch for the plants...could be costly though.. I'm having to work right through the bank holiday weekend, so my theory is that it's treat time baby!

Earlier I had a ramble around R H S Rosemoor with a friend...bliss. The photos haven't flown from my phone to ipad yet so I'll edit and upload later.
